About Kékestető

Kékestető is the summit of Kékes, Hungary's highest mountain at 1,014m, in the Mátra range. The name means "bluish top," after the blue tint the mountain takes on from a distance. Thick forest covers the top, and the best views come from the summit TV Tower's lookout deck. From up there the wooded ridges spread out in every direction giving you endless photogenic views. If you have a long lens in your kit you can use it to pick out the far hills as they fade into layers of blue. On a really clear day you can see all the way to the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. (Crisp autumn and winter days are your best chance for those long views.) While you are exploring the area make sure to find the summit stone painted in the colours of the Hungarian flag. It makes a unique, colourful foreground to contrast against the soaring steel tower behind it. Snow often sits up here well into the spring and autumn turns the forest around the tower orange and gold, making this the kind of location you want to visit over and over again to capture all the changes throughout the year. You can drive up from Gyöngyös through Mátraháza, and there are parking lots a short walk from the tower along well marked trails. Accessing the lookout deck requires a ticket but there are also plenty of photogenic views from ground level. Plan on arriving early on a clear weekend during the fall colours since the parking lot does fill up fast. (Gyöngyös, Heves, Hungary)
