About Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light
The Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light sits at the mouth of the Portage River near Jacobsville, Michigan. The tower is distinctive with its octagonal steel design sitting on a square concrete base, painted white with a black lantern room and a red roof. Sitting at the end of a long concrete breakwater it marks the lower end of the Keweenaw Waterway, and is still in use today. The breakwater creates an amazing leading line straight to the tower. The lantern room has diamond shaped windows, which a long lens will pick up from partway along. Open water lies on the east side of the breakwater, so sunrise comes up over the bay. From the beach you can capture the whole breakwater and the tower in one frame. The tower itself is closed to the public, but you can get out onto the breakwater to shoot from various distances out over the water. Wind puts water over the concrete and can make it quite slippery so keep an eye on the conditions while you are shooting. (Jacobsville, Michigan, USA)
