About Klein Leeukoppie
Klein Leeukoppie, also called Little Lion's Head, is a rocky peak between Hout Bay, Sandy Bay and Llandudno with amazing views looking out over the ocean. It's a short, steep climb from the top of the Mount Rhodes estate in Hout Bay, and most people reach the summit in under an hour. You can see all the way around from the top. This viewpoint gives you an especially photogenic view straight down onto Llandudno. From up here the village becomes a cluster of white houses on the rich green hillside abovethe curved white beach, with deep blue Atlantic water beyond. A wide angle lens lets you fit the whole curve of the beach along with the white houses dotting the hillside, or you can experiment with using a longer lens to pick out the boulders and the waves breaking over them. If you turn to face south there is an incredible view down over Hout Bay, and looking north past Llandudno gives you the Table Mountain range running up the coast. The Atlantic sits on the western side of the summit so late afternoon is when the sand and granite warm up and the water shows its colour. The trail to the summit crosses through private land but the owners let hikers pass through. To access the start of the trail there is a pedestrian gate at the end of Valley View Dr and you will have to ring the bell on the intercom. The gate has specific open hours and does close in the evening, so make sure to check the times on the sign when heading up for a sunset shoot so you can leave enough time to get back down.
