Kodachrome Basin State Park is a compact but visually striking desert landscape packed with tall sandstone chimneys, red rock spires, and warm-toned formations that glow intensely in the right light. The 67 monolithic spires scattered across the basin are the main draw, and shooting low and wide with a 16-35mm lens lets you exaggerate their height against a deep blue sky. Golden hour is transformative here, especially in the morning when raking light catches the texture of the red and orange rock while the surrounding basin stays in cool shadow. The Sentinel Trail and Shakespeare Arch Trail are both short and easy, putting you close to the best formations without a strenuous hike. You are likely to have compositions to yourself, which is a real advantage compared to the nearby national parks. A polarizing filter helps deepen the sky and cut haze on bright midday shots if you stay through the day. (Cannonville, Utah, United States)
