About Koutu Boulders
Koutu Boulders are a collection of huge, almost perfectly spherical concretions that were slowly formed along the sea floor over millions of years. The boulders on the beach have been released from their soft host rock by erosion and simply rolled down and accumulated on the beach. The biggest ones at Koutu Beach reach 3 metres in diameter before the erosion of the softer rock exposes them. There are more boulders under the surface; given enough time, the wind and the waves will eventually reveal them. (Opononi, New Zealand)
