About Landgoed Mariëndaal
Mariëndaal is a hilly country estate between Arnhem and Oosterbeek with a trio of shooting gems. Groene Bedstee is a tunnel of beech trees where the branches weave together overhead and the path fades into green. It works as an amazing straight down the middle composition in any season: fresh greens in spring, deep shade in summer, copper and gold in autumn, and bare grey branches in winter. Light through the leaves is fun to experiment with too. Bright midday sun spots the path with shadows, an overcast day or the low light of early morning gives a crisp tone from one end to the other. A railway embankment cuts the grounds in two with an old brick tunnel going under it. This gives you a dark frame with the avenue lit beyond. Then tucked away in the trees there is a small domed chapel (Christuskoepel) is also worth a stop. The house itself is private and stays out of bounds. Access to the park is free, with parking at the entrance on Mariëndaal and a marked trail circles the park. (Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands)
