About Las Canales (Padules)

Las Canales (Padules) is a 2 km gorge cut by the Andarax River just south of the village of Padules. The river drops through a string of clear pools and small waterfalls, surrounded by high rock walls that the water has slowly worn smooth and rounded. It was declared a Natural Monument in 2019. In the peaceful stretches of river the banks fill in with ash and poplar trees, that will give you some soft greens to frame the pools. The little falls are great spots to experiment with a slow shutter speed. Depending on the water level, there is usually space to so set up low beside a pool and let the rock walls close in on either side of the frame. Where the canyon narrows, the walls keep the river in shade, so you may find yourself battling with the light to find just the right amount. A brighter overcast day will help even the light out. In autumn the poplars along the river banks turn yellow to some warm colours against the grey rock and dark water. The gorge is easy to access with a well marked trail leading you in from the one of the two parking lots with wooden footbridges crossing the river along the way. Parking is free for most of the year, but there is a fee during tourist season in summer. Come prepare to end up with wet feet since the narrowest sections have no dry path and some pools get deeper after heavy rain. Exploring the whole gorge usually takes a half day at an easy pace, so plan on lots of time to stop and shoot along the winding trial. (Padules, Andalusia, Spain)
