Las Pozas is a sprawling surrealist sculpture garden built by British artist Edward James across a steep stretch of subtropical rainforest in the Sierra Gorda mountains. The draw for photographers is the collision of raw concrete and dense jungle: spiral staircases that climb and stop in mid-air, gothic arches, towering pillars, and column capitals shaped like giant flowers, all stained with moss and slowly being reclaimed by vines and tree canopy. The structures sit on multiple levels connected by narrow paths and unrailed platforms, so you can work them from below to emphasise scale or from the walkways for tighter compositions that frame one form through another. Bare grey concrete reads well against the green, and the heavy morning mist that settles in the valley softens the light, separates the structures into layers, and hides the modern surroundings, which is the best window for atmospheric shots. Overcast and post-rain conditions also work in your favour since the canopy blocks harsh sun and the wet surfaces deepen the texture of the moss and stone. Go early to beat both the heat and the crowds, watch your footing on the steep drops, and bring a wide lens for the full towers plus something longer for picking out details like the spiral steps and the repeating bamboo-style concrete posts. Access is by a single entrance with a fee and limited daily entries, and the approach road is rough, so allow extra time getting there. (Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico)
