Laurel Hill Furnace is a well-preserved 19th-century iron smelting furnace rising from the Pennsylvania countryside, its rough-cut stone walls and four arched openings making it a compelling subject for architectural and historical photography. The symmetry of the arches invites tight compositions that emphasize the craftsmanship and age of the structure, while stepping back lets you capture the full height of the furnace against the surrounding trees. Get low and shoot through one of the arches to frame the opening as a natural vignette, or use a wide angle to show the entire structure in its wooded context. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening shadows and bringing out the texture of the stone without harsh contrast. A 24-70mm lens covers most situations well. The site is accessible and relatively easy to reach, and the lack of crowds means you can take your time working different angles. (St. Clair Township, Pennsylvania, United States)
