About Lincoln Tomb State Historic Place

Lincoln's Tomb stands in Oak Ridge Cemetery under a soaring granite obelisk. Abraham Lincoln is buried here with his wife Mary and three of their sons. The sculptor Larkin Mead designed it, and it was finished in 1874. Bronze statue groups sit around the base of the obelisk, and stone stairs climb to a terrace on all four sides. Standing close at the foot of the stairs and tilting up allows you to put the whole obelisk in a single frame with the bronzes underneath. A bronze bust of Lincoln sits at the entrance, and its nose is worn bright from people rubbing it. That detail is worth pausing for a tight shot. Autumn is quite photogenic, since Oak Ridge is full of mature trees that slowly turn colours. Inside, marble corridors lead around to the burial chamber. No tripods are allowed inside so you'll have to go with handheld photography. Volunteers in Civil War uniforms lower the flag on Tuesday evenings through the summer. (Springfield, Illinois, USA)
