Lit & Phil Library
The Lit & Phil, short for the Literary and Philosophical Society, is Newcastle's grand independent library dating back to 1825, and its interior is one of the most striking architectural spaces in the north of England. Stepping through the unassuming entrance on Westgate Road, you find yourself in a soaring, gallery-lined reading room filled with dark wood shelving, tall arched windows, and thousands of leather-bound books stacked to the ceiling. Shoot from the main floor looking toward the far end to capture the full depth of the room, or climb to the upper gallery and shoot downward for a compelling overhead perspective. Midday is ideal when natural light pours through the high windows, reducing the need to push your ISO too far in the dim interior. A wide-angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well for the full room, while a short telephoto pulls out the decorative details. Entry is free and the staff are welcoming to photographers.
