About Little Brown Church

The Little Brown Church is a cute litte wooden church painted brown, standing in a grove of trees just outside Nashua in northeast Iowa. This historic gem dates back to the 1860s and is still a working church today. It's also a wedding church with well over seventy thousand couples married here, and the bell still gets rung after every one. The building itself is small and plain, with a classic rural chapel design. Trees crowd in close on every side, so you can frame it through the grove from almost anywhere on the lawn. October turns the whole place gold. Winter is just as good with snow on the roof to contrast with the rich browns of the chapel. Inside is open daily and features a collection of old photographs on the walls. There are two main things you need to plan around. Weddings run Thursday through Saturday all year, so come Monday to Wednesday if you want the place to yourself. And the church is home to an active congregation so make sure to give worshippers their space and privacy. The grounds spread out into a few acres of gardens, so there is lots of room to experiment with compositions and light. (Nashua, Iowa, USA)
