A single coconut palm rises dramatically from a black sand shoreline at Keawaiki Bay, creating one of the Big Island's most striking natural compositions. The contrast between the dark volcanic sand, deep blue Pacific water, and the lone tree makes it naturally photogenic from almost any angle. Shoot wide to include the full sweep of the bay, or get low and close to emphasize the black sand texture in the foreground with the palm silhouetted against the sky. Sunrise and golden hour light work beautifully here, especially when the sky goes warm and reflects off the wet sand near the waterline. To reach it, park along Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and hike across the lava field, wearing sturdy shoes as the terrain is sharp and uneven. A wide angle lens handles the landscape well, but a mid-range zoom gives you flexibility for tighter compositions of the tree against the water. (Waikoloa, Hawaii, United States)
