Magdeburg Cathedral
Magdeburg Cathedral stands imposingly over the surrounding city as one of the largest churches in the eastern part of Germany. It was constructed between 1209 and 1520 but was already dedicated and in use from 1363 as the first and oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany. The rock on which the cathedral of Magdeburg was built, was not big enough to accommodate the whole church. This caused the south tower to be built on sand and as a result it was designed to be an empty shell built as light as possible. All the bells are in the northern tower, which also has a staircase and viewing platform (just over 400 stairs). (Magdeburg, Germany)
