Perched at the southeastern tip of O'ahu, this dramatic coastal lookout delivers a sweeping panorama of deep turquoise water, jagged black lava cliffs, and the iconic red-roofed Makapuu Lighthouse sitting on a rocky point below. The combination of rugged coastline, rolling Pacific swells, and the Koolau mountain range behind you gives almost every frame a natural sense of depth. Shoot toward the lighthouse with the cliffs framing either side, or turn your lens seaward to catch the long breaking waves against the lava shoreline. Morning light is ideal, with the sun rising over the ocean and casting warm tones across the water before midday haze sets in. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full scale of the scene. The lookout is reached via a paved but moderately steep trail from the parking lot, and between January and March you have a strong chance of spotting humpback whales offshore.
