Malham Cove is a dramatic curved limestone cliff rising around 80 metres from the valley floor, with a vast pavement of cracked and fissured rock at the top that makes it one of the most distinctive geological features in England. From the base, use a wide angle lens to capture the full sweep of the curved amphitheatre, positioning yourself far enough back to take in the scale while using the stream and surrounding greenery as foreground interest. The top offers a completely different set of shots, where the fractured limestone pavement creates strong natural leading lines and geometric patterns worth exploring with both wide and standard focal lengths. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and bringing out the texture of the pale rock without harsh shadows. The short walk up the stepped path to the top is manageable for most visitors, and arriving early keeps crowds to a minimum. (Malham, North Yorkshire, England)
