Maloja Pass

Maloja Pass sits at the western edge of the Engadin valley in the Swiss Alps, where the road dramatically drops away and reveals a sweeping view over Lake Sils and the Upper Engadin lakes stretching toward St. Moritz. The classic composition here is from the hairpin bends above the village, where you can use the winding road as a leading line drawing the eye down into the valley below. A wide angle lens works beautifully for capturing both the foreground curves and the expansive lake and mountain backdrop. Dusk is particularly rewarding, when alpenglow catches the peaks and the lakes take on deep blue tones; golden hour morning light is also worth the early start. In winter, snow transforms the scene entirely, but check road conditions before heading up, as closures after heavy snowfall are common and winter tires or chains are essential.
