Marinha Beach Viewpoint
This viewpoint sits on the cliffs just west of the car park at Praia da Marinha and gives you the classic elevated shot looking down over the beach, the golden limestone cliffs, and the sea stacks and arches that stretch out into the Atlantic. Praia da Marinha regularly appears on lists of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and from up here it is easy to see why. The limestone is 16 to 24 million years old and erosion has carved it into pillars, caves, and natural arches that glow in shades of orange and ochre, especially in early morning and late afternoon light. The contrast between the warm rock and the turquoise water below is striking. Walking further west along the cliff path from this first viewpoint, you reach the angle where the double sea arch known as the Arcos Naturais lines up to form a near-perfect heart shape. It is called O Coração do Algarve and it is one of the most photographed views in southern Portugal. The path along the cliffs is also the starting point for the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Sete Vales Suspensos), a 6 km coastal walk toward Carvoeiro with dramatic views the entire way. The car park is small and fills up quickly in summer, especially by mid-morning. Get here early for both the light and the parking. The beach and viewpoint are free to access.
