On the western side of Marsalforn Bay, a series of cement steps and walkways extend out from the shore into the bay creating a unique shooting location that most people walk right past. The steps lead you down to water level, which completely changes how the bay looks compared to shooting from the promenade above. You get the curve of the bay, the colourful line of townhouses and restaurants, the church steeple, and the fishing boats all in one view with the water as the perfect foreground. This spot becomes even more photogenic during the evening and into blue hour. As the light fades the waterfront buildings start switching on their lights, the reflections stretch across the bay and you've got a ready made long exposure scene. A tripod is essential for this and a wider lens helps you take in the full view of the bay. One important thing to keep in mind is the tide. As the water rises, those steps and walkways disappear, so pay attention to what the water is doing while you're shooting. It can creep up on you if you're focused on your frame and not checking around you. The promenade above is also worth exploring for a higher vantage point, but the best views are from those steps at the water's edge. (Marsalforn, Island of Gozo, Malta)
