Lake Matheson is one of New Zealand's most iconic reflection shots, where the still surface mirrors the snow-capped peaks of Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman against a frame of dark native kahikatea and rimu forest. The key to getting the classic shot is timing: arrive well before sunrise or in the early morning before any wind disturbs the water, as even a light breeze will break up the reflection. Two main viewpoints, "View of Reflections" and "Jetty Viewpoint," give you slightly different compositions along the easy loop track, taking around 45 to 60 minutes to walk. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing both the peaks and their mirror image together. Overcast days can flatten the scene, so aim for clear skies with calm conditions. The car park is well-signposted just outside Fox Glacier township and the track is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. (Fox Glacier, West Coast, New Zealand)
