About Mayon Cliff Ship Wreck
Mayon Cliff Ship Wreck is the rusting remains of the RMS Mülheim, a German cargo ship sitting at the bottom of a rocky inlet between Sennen Cove and Land's End. It ran aground here in 2003, then autumn storms later broke the hull in two and pushed the stern section into the inlet. What's left is a tangle of orange rusted steel and decking, with patches of the ship's blue paint still showing through. From the coast path on the cliff edge you look down onto the wreck, with the Maen Castle headland and the tip of Land's End lined up behind it. If you have a longer lens in your kit, using it here will let you pull out the rusted plates and twisted metal against the white water. On winter evenings the sun goes down roughly in line with the view, so it can be a great spot to experiment with silhouettes of the headland. Rough days are a great time to be here, if you don't mind being out in the wind. White water breaking around the dark rocks and orange steel makes for a completely different shot. The view above the shipwreck from the path is easily accessible with a 10 minute walk along the South West Coast Path from Sennen Cove, or you can walk in from Land's End. Accessing the shipwreck itself it much trickier since it is at the bottom of a rock cove so be careful venturing down and watch out for sharp rusty metal. Make sure to plan on extra time you can pair it with the rest of the walk out to Land's End for a full afternoon on the cliffs. (Sennen, Cornwall, United Kingdom)
