Rising 120 metres above the Docklands precinct, this giant observation wheel gives you a sweeping aerial perspective of Melbourne that is hard to match from ground level. Inside the climate-controlled gondolas, you can frame the CBD skyline, Port Phillip Bay, and the Dandenong Ranges all in a single session as the wheel completes its slow rotation. Shooting through the gondola glass requires some care; press your lens close to the surface to reduce reflections and use a polarising filter if you have one. Sunset is the prime time to visit, when warm light hits the skyscrapers and the bay turns golden. Night rides are equally rewarding for long-exposure city light trails, so bring a small gorilla tripod or brace against the glass. Wide to standard focal lengths work best, roughly 24mm to 50mm, for capturing the full sweep of the city below. (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)
