Memory Chapel is a tiny Carpenter Gothic Victorian church built in 1870, making it the oldest Protestant church in the Harbor area of Los Angeles, and its white wooden facade, pointed arch windows, and steeply pitched roofline give it a storybook quality that photographs beautifully. Shoot from across the street to get the full exterior in frame, using a 35mm or 50mm lens to capture the building in context with its surroundings. The white painted wood responds well to soft overcast light, which reduces harsh shadows and brings out the delicate architectural details; midmorning on a cloudy day is ideal. If you can arrange interior access, the original 1870 pews and intimate nave make for compelling documentary-style frames. The chapel sits in a quiet residential neighborhood in Wilmington, so street parking is generally easy to find nearby. (Wilmington, Los Angeles, California, United States)
