Painted a rich cobalt blue from deck to counterweight, the Minnesota Slip Bridge is a small steel drawbridge that carries walkers and cyclists across over the canal between Canal Park and the convention centre. The span is only about 23 m, so the whole structure fits in a normal lens from either bank. The bridge is covered in unique details from the overhead frames to the ornamental fish and star cutouts in the railings, and the round finials on the posts. The best time to be there is when a charter boat needs through and the two leaves swing up. Capturing the raised bridge against the harbour is more about luck than careful planning which will give you a unique shot in your collection. Standing on the Canal Park side of the slip will give you a clean side-on view with the water underneath, or you can get onto the deck itself and shoot down its length with the blue rails working as leading lines. The rich paint holds its colour in overcast light and turns almost electric in low sun, while harsh midday light flattens it to a dull steel tone. In the evening the bridge is lit and the water in the slip goes still enough for reflections. Access is free but in the warm months the bridge gets busy, so plan on having to wait for gaps.
