Montauk Point Lighthouse stands at the rugged eastern tip of Long Island, where the crashing surf of the Atlantic surrounds three sides of the rocky bluff it sits on, making it one of the most dramatic lighthouse settings on the East Coast. The classic red and white tower pairs well with the boulder-strewn shoreline below, and you can work multiple angles by scrambling down to the rocks for low, wide compositions that put the waves in the foreground. A wide-angle lens works well for environmental shots, while a medium telephoto lets you isolate the tower against the sky. Golden hour light is excellent here, particularly at sunrise when the warm tones hit the east-facing facade directly. The surrounding state park is open and accessible, and low tide gives you more room to work along the rocky beach below the bluff without getting wet. (Montauk, New York, United States)
