Monument Rocks is a cluster of chalk formations rising up out of flat, open prairie. They are roughly 80 million years old, formed from Niobrara chalk when this part of Kansas was under a shallow sea. The formations include pillars, buttes, arches, and the Keyhole (a natural arch perfectly frames the plains beyond it). Fossils of ancient sea creatures are visible embedded in the chalk if you look closely. With their flat, empty surroundings the rock formations look surreal rising out of nothing, and the open sky in every direction gives you clean backgrounds no matter where you stand. Late afternoon light warms the chalk and brings out the texture in the rocks. Sunrise can bring some amazing colours and a peaceful vibe that works well too. The area has very little light pollution, which makes a perfect location to experiment with astrophotography. The Milky Way appearing over the rock formations is a shot that is definitely worth planning for. The rock formations sit on private property, but the owner allows public access around the clock so remember to stay on the site grounds and respect the rest of the owner's property. There are no services out here. No water, no restrooms, and no cell signal so make sure you plan ahead and bring everything you may need. The site is only accessible along gravel and dirt roads. After a rain those roads can turn to mud and become impassable, so check conditions before heading out. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and Castle Rock are both nearby and worth combining into bigger shooting adventure. (Gove County, Kansas, USA)
