Mosaic Canyon is a narrow slot canyon in Death Valley National Park where polished marble walls, layered breccia, and mosaic-patterned rock create an extraordinary natural gallery for close-up geology and abstract texture shots. The smooth, curving white and grey marble in the lower canyon is the highlight; get low and shoot upward to emphasize the sweeping walls, or press your back against one side to capture the compressed depth of the narrows. A wide-angle lens works beautifully here for environmental shots, while a macro or short telephoto lets you isolate the intricate mosaic breccia patterns. Midday light, which is usually a problem outdoors, actually works in your favor inside the narrows by bouncing soft, diffused light off the pale walls. The trailhead is accessible via a rough but manageable dirt road off Highway 190 near Stovepipe Wells; standard vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions.
