Mount Ida Falls
Mount Ida Falls is a surprisingly dramatic urban waterfall tucked into a narrow gorge carved by the Poesten Kill river, right in the heart of Troy. The falls drop with real force through layered rock walls, giving you a scene that feels far removed from the city surrounding it. From the upper viewing area you can frame the full drop with the gorge walls closing in on either side; getting lower along the rocky banks puts you closer to the water and lets you use the stream as a leading line into the falls. Overcast days are ideal here since the gorge is shaded and flat light keeps the contrast manageable, but early morning can work well too before foot traffic picks up. A wide to mid-range zoom covers most angles comfortably. Parking is straightforward and the main view is a short walk from the road, with a bit of careful scrambling to reach the best lower compositions. (Troy, New York, United States)
