About Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve
Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve is 140 hectares of open native grassland in the middle of Canberra's Gungahlin Valley. The grounds are pretty flat with a scatter of old gums along the western and northern ridges, and is home a variety of endangered species hiding in the grass. The flat horizon gives you the option to add a huge amount of sky. Sunset is the best time to be here. The ridge trees drop into silhouette and the sky opens up behind them, often with amazing colours. There are two dams sit in the western corners that give a completely different feel to your compositions. Plus if you are lucky (and patient) you will be able to experiment with wildlife photography. Red-rumped parrots hide in the short grass near the edges, and kangaroos sometimes come out onto the open ground in the early evening. Superb Parrots live the gums up on the ridges. Spring adds wildflowers to the grassy fields which can add pops of colour to your compositions. It's free to walk in, with entries off Gungahlin Drive and from streets on the Franklin side. Since this is a protected reserve it is important to stay on the tracks and protect this fragile ecosystem. The grass is left long on purpose as a lizard habitat. Dogs, bikes, drones and horses aren't allowed on the reserve. (Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia)
