Napanee Mills

Napanee Mills - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Napanee Mills sits along the Napanee River in downtown Napanee, where a historic millsite frames a compact but photogenic waterfall cascading over a stone dam. The combination of rushing water, weathered stonework, and the old mill buildings gives you strong foreground interest in nearly every direction. Shoot from the riverbank downstream to capture the full width of the dam with the falls as your subject, or get lower to emphasize the water texture and leading lines of the stonework. The surrounding trees make this an excellent spot in autumn when fall color reflects in the calmer water below the falls. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening the contrast and bringing out the detail in the aged stone and timber. A wide to mid-range lens handles most compositions well. The site is accessible on foot from the town center, and the riverbank gives you room to move and adjust your framing. (Napanee, Ontario, Canada)
