Rising dramatically above the flat Lincoln skyline, the Nebraska State Capitol is one of the most architecturally distinctive government buildings in the country, its 400-foot limestone tower topped by the famous "Sower" bronze statue making it instantly recognizable from miles away. Unlike traditional dome-first capitol designs, the tower-based structure gives you strong vertical compositions that reward a wide-angle lens, especially when you frame the building from the surrounding grounds with manicured lawns or pathways leading the eye upward. The four ornate exterior facades each offer different detail work worth exploring up close with a longer lens. Midday light can be harsh but works well to reveal the intricate limestone carvings; golden hour softens the warm stone tones beautifully. The building sits in an open plaza with good clearance on all sides, making it easy to back up for full-tower shots without obstruction. (Lincoln, Nebraska, United States)
