New York Marble Cemetery
Tucked behind an iron fence on a quiet East Village block, this hidden burial ground offers a rare slice of early 19th-century New York that feels completely removed from the city surrounding it. The cemetery is an open grassy rectangle lined with marble vault markers embedded in the perimeter walls, giving you a clean, symmetrical composition when you shoot along the length of the space. The surrounding brick tenements frame the scene beautifully, and the contrast between weathered stone inscriptions and green lawn reads well in almost any light. Overcast days work best here, softening shadows and reducing glare on the marble surfaces, while late afternoon sun in summer rakes low across the wall tablets and brings out texture. A 35mm or 50mm lens suits the confined space well. Note that the cemetery is only open to the public on select Sundays from spring through fall, so check the schedule before visiting.
