Newport Rockpool
Perched at the southern end of Newport Beach, this ocean pool is one of Sydney's Northern Beaches most dramatic saltwater spots, where natural rock platforms form the floor and big swell regularly washes over the walls in spectacular fashion. The pool's unique character is that it nearly disappears at high tide, so timing your visit around low to mid tide gives you the clearest lines and reflections. Shoot from the rocks at the pool's edge during golden hour, using the lane lines or pool walls as leading lines toward the open ocean; a wide angle lens works well here to capture both the foreground water detail and the breaking waves beyond. Sunrise is particularly rewarding when the light catches the spray and the pool glows without crowds. Wear shoes with grip on the wet rock platforms and stay aware of wave action, especially in big swell. (Newport, New South Wales, Australia)
