About Nick's Cove

Nicks Cove is a tiny gem looking out over Tomales Bay. There is a quiet stretch of rocky coastline right next to Miller Boat Launch that is the perfect spot to capture a sunset. You are on the east shore here, looking west at the Point Reyes peninsula, so the sun drops behind Inverness Ridge rather than into open water. That means the light will fade earlier than you expect. Since the bay is sheltered just after sunset the water usually turns glassy and the afterglow sits on the surface long after the sun is gone. Getting down low with a wide lens lets the foreground stone lead your eye out into the bay, or slow the shutter and let the water go soft around it. Next to the boat launch, the pier runs out over the water with a boat shack at the end creating an amazing leading line to experiment with. Plus the boat shack silhouettes perfectly against the western sky. Fog is a regular thing on this bay and can shut the whole view down, or add an eerie vibe to your compositions depending on the shooting style you prefer. (Nicks Cove, California, United States)
