About North Lake Harbour
North Lake Harbour is a bustling channel of dark water running straight out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence with fishing boats lining each side. The N Lake Harbour Rd crosses the channel at the south end, and that bridge is the ideal vantage point. You can look north down the length of the harbour as it curves toward open sea at the far end or you can look south over the boathouses into the lake. Then you can explore the wharves, which are open to the public. Rusty steel sheet piling, stacked lobster traps, a little observation tower, and colourful boathouses line both sides of the channel giving you endless shooting options. Plus the boats themselves are often bright colours and change constantly as they come and go. A telephoto lens from the west wharf stacks the boats and the sheds into one crowded frame that highlights the bustling feel of this harbour. The channel is sheltered, so early mornings often hold glassy reflections before the wind and the boat traffic pick up. Light comes off the water from the north, which means the boats along the wharves take side light from the east in the morning and the west in the evening, plus summer sunsets drop into the gulf just off the breakwater. Tuna season runs late summer into fall, and if a boat comes in with one, the weigh-in on the wharf draws a crowd. While spring gets taken over by the lobster fleet. Parking is free beside the wharves and the beach is a two minute walk from the harbour. Bring a long lens and keep an eye out so you can stay out of the way of the forklifts.
