O'Hara Mill Homestead

O'Hara Mill Homestead - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Tucked just off Highway 7 in Hastings County, this heritage site preserves a working 19th-century sawmill alongside a collection of restored pioneer buildings beside a quiet millpond. The combination of weathered timber architecture, the covered wooden bridge, and still water reflecting the surrounding trees gives you a lot to work with in a compact area. Shoot from the bank to capture the mill and its reflection together, or position yourself on or near the covered bridge for framing shots through its open ends. Early morning light is ideal, when mist often sits on the pond and the golden hour catches the warm tones of the aged wood. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions well here. The site is free to visit and easy to walk, with soft ground near the water's edge worth watching in wet conditions. (Madoc, Ontario, Canada)
