Oakabella Homestead is a historic property that sits surrounded by farmland in Western Australia's Midwest, just north of Geraldton. The property dates back to the 1850s with the original 13 room stone homestead, buttressed two storey barn, and shearing shed all still standing today. The barn is the standout. The big stone buttresses on each corner give it a chunky, solid look that photographs really well, especially late in the day when warm light catches the stonework. Behind the homestead there is a gorge along Oakabella Creek with rugged cliff faces, rock pools lined with River Redgums, and a waterfall that flows in winter and spring. With Elephant Hill and Table Hill nearby there are broader landscape compositions to experiment with. Wildflowers begin to appear in the cooler months and add pops of colour across the property. If you camp overnight the skies are dark and wide open, so it works well for astrophotography. Sunsets are great out here too. The property runs tours of the homestead and barn at 10am and 2pm, and there is a tea room on site. Camping is available with basic facilities. (Bowes, Western Australia, Australia)
