Old Donation Church
Built in 1736, Old Donation Church is one of the oldest surviving colonial-era churches in Virginia, and its ivy-covered brick walls, weathered headstones, and quiet churchyard make it a rewarding stop for architectural and documentary photographers alike. The exterior offers strong compositions, particularly the classic three-quarter angle that captures both the gabled facade and the long side wall with its arched windows. The surrounding graveyard, with its moss-covered markers dating back centuries, pairs well with the church as a backdrop, especially when using a wider lens to show the full scene. Morning light from the east bathes the front facade beautifully, while overcast days are ideal for shooting the cemetery details without harsh shadows. The site is easily accessible with open grounds, and a 24-70mm or similar mid-range zoom gives you enough flexibility to work both tight details and wider environmental shots.
