About 'olołkoy Beach Park
'olołkoy Beach Park is where Oxnard's flat green lawn and its rows of tall palms stretch out into a strip of low dunes. Beyond the dunes the beach opens up wide and pale, with the Channel Islands sitting out on the horizon. Crossing the dunes and heading out onto the beach lets you turn around to capture the palms lined up against the sky with the dune grass softening the foreground in front of them. The beach sand is fine and almost white here. This lets the sand take on colour from the sky, especially during sunset. The coast here faces southwest, which puts the sun into the water in the evening and often sets it down behind Anacapa or Santa Cruz Island. Using a telephoto lens you can pull the islands up out of the haze and highlight them as the sun goes down. Mornings are the other great option, the palms and dunes will be front-lit and the beach is usually empty so you will have lots of space to experiment. Parking lots sit right off Harbor Boulevard, the bike path along the coast runs through the park. The whole area fills up on weekends, especially in the summer so you will have to time your shooting around crowds. Ideally try to come on a weekday morning/evening and you'll have the dunes to yourself. (Oxnard, California, United States)
