Olomana First Peak rewards the effort of a steep, rope-assisted climb with one of the most dramatic summit views on O'ahu's windward side. From the top, you get a sweeping panorama that takes in the jagged Ko'olau ridgeline, the turquoise expanse of Kailua Bay, Waimānalo's coastline, and on clear days the twin islands of Nā Mokulua sitting offshore. Shoot wide to capture the full sweep of ridge and ocean together, or compress the layers of peaks with a short telephoto around 70mm. Morning light is ideal, arriving before midday clouds build up against the mountains and obscure the ridgeline. The trail is roughly 1.5 miles to the first peak but involves serious elevation gain and exposed scrambling, so wear proper footwear and keep your camera secure in a pack until you reach the summit. The peak itself is narrow, so work quickly and carefully when repositioning for different angles. (Maunawili, O'ahu, Hawaii, United States)
