About Otter Estuary Nature Reserve
The Otter Estuary Nature Reserve is a tidal stretch of marshes and mudflats on the eastern edge of Budleigh Salterton, where the River Otter runs out to the sea. The whole area, along with the cliffs of Otterton Point, has been designated a site of Special Scientific Interest in order to preserve it's fragile ecosystem. This wide, flat valley of winding creeks, reed beds, soft mud, along with the red sandstone cliffs of Otter Head rising on the far side is all just begging to be photographed. A path winds along the west bank from the Lime Kiln car park, with viewing platforms along the way, a new footbridge and a hide on the east side give you endless shooting opportunities as you explore the whole area. Over 120 bird species have been recorded here, and in winter the mud fills with waders and wildfowl, so make sure to have a long lens in your kit. When the tide is out, the creeks create the perfect leading lines in for wider shots, and as the tide returns is pushes the birds in closer to the path. This whole area is easily accessible with lots of parking at Lime Kiln. If you are lucky, the river's wild beavers will appear around dusk. Budleigh Salterton Beach and the start of the coast path toward Sidmouth are right beside the car park, so plan on staying well past sunset to capture it all in once shooting adventure.
