About Percé Rock and Cap Mont Joli
Cap Mont-Joli is a wide grassy headland at the east end of the village, looking straight out over the Gulf of St. Lawrence with an amazing view of Percé Rock. The rock sits just offshore at the tip of the cape with it's sea arch and the lone pillar of L'Obélisque at its far end. There's plenty of open ground up here, so you can easily explore the cape and experiment with the rock shifts as you move. From the southern side you get the whole length of the the rock, with the arch sitting at the far end and the reddish gravel bar curving below. Closer to the tip, Percé Rock stacks up into one tall, rugged mass rising out of the gbay. In summer, yellow wildflowers dot the grassy edge making an nice foreground with some pops of contrasting colours. The long south face catches afternoon and evening sun, so the rust tones warm up and pop against the rich turquoise surrounding bay. If sunrise is more your shooting style, the northern side of the cape warms up early in the day. A longer lens pulls Bonaventure Island in behind the rock or works well to isolate the arch on its own. There is parking just off Rte 132 and its a short walk up the hill to the top of the cape. Give yourself lots of time to experiment with various compositions. Since this area sits within Bonaventure Island and Percé Rock National Park it is a no fly zone so you'll have to leave your drone at home.. (Percé, Quebec, Canada)
