About Pfarrkirche Ardagger Markt
Pfarrkirche Ardagger Markt (St. Nicholas Church) is a medieval church sitting high above the village of Ardagger Markt, surrounded by its old cemetery and rolling green hills. Its oldest walls go back to the 11th century, with various Gothic additions slowly built on over the following centuries. The tower was originally built as a lookout over the surrounding valley for defence, and its walls are about 2m thick. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of boatmen, and crews once climbed up here to pray before taking their boats through the dangerous stretch of the Danube River just downstream. From the village below you can find lots of spots to frame the church and its tower rising above the rooftops. Up on the church grounds you can experiment with adding rows of the historic graves stones to make an interesting foreground against the church. Plus from the hillside you can see down into the Danube valley. Since the tower faces south over the village, it catches sun through most of the day. The church is mainly accessible by foot, although the is space to park a few cars at the top of the hill by the church grounds. To walk you will have climb the 123 steps up from the village with an amazing view looking over the surrounding valley as you climb. It is still an active cemetery, so make sure be respectful of the graves and anyone visiting them. Plus if you've got time, the old pillory in the village is worth photographing while you are here.
