About Pig Beach, Big Major Cay
Ass you arrive into the shallows off Pig Beach tucked away on the western side Big Major Cay and the resident pigs will paddle out through the turquoise water to meet your boat. The cay is is completely uninhabited except for a unique collection of pigs and their piglets living along this short strip of pale sand. Pink, black and spotted coats stand out against the rich turquoise water. Since the pigs are so curious it will be easy to start shooting immediately from the boat as they swim toward you, plus you can easily get down along the waterline to capture the beach along with the pigs that call it home. This is the ideal spot to experiment with shooting from within a waterproof housing, which does add challenges to setting up your compositions so it may take some trial and error to get the hang of it. You can play with shooting the whole area with half above, and half below frames. These kinds of compositions let you highlight their legs kicking under the surface with a snout riding above it. The high sun that lights up the shallows also flattens pale sand and pink skin, so pull you may want to turn your exposure down and watch the highlights. This beach (and island) is only accessible by boat. Most people come on a tour from nearby Staniel Cay, or on longer day trips from Great Exuma or Nassau. Make sure to follow all of the local rules/instructions about feeding, and keeping you bags/gear sealed. The pigs will climb aboard in shallow water and these rules protect the pigs and their habitat. Try to book a tour that is early or late in the day for both softer light and fewer other boats/tourists to try and shoot around. (Big Major Cay, Exuma, The Bahamas)
