Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Standing at 115 feet tall, Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the most photogenic lighthouses on the West Coast, set against dramatic bluffs with the Pacific crashing below. The classic composition is a wide shot from the south side of the point, placing the tower against the sky with the coastline sweeping into the frame; a 24-35mm lens works well here. Golden hour light is ideal, especially at sunset when warm tones wash over the white tower and the surrounding keeper cottages add depth to the scene. Early morning fog is common and can create a moody, atmospheric look if you time it right. The accessible boardwalk leads you to different vantage points along the bluff, so walk the full path before committing to a spot. Watch for waves on the rocks below and keep an eye out for wildlife, including elephant seals and migrating gray whales from January through April. (Pescadero, California, United States)
