Pilgrims' Way - Lindisfarne

Pilgrims' Way - Lindisfarne - Photo by John Allan 1 / 1

For 1,300 years the Pilgrims Way footpath, marked with a line of upright poles, was the only access to Holy Island during low tide. Once the tidal waters came back the island would return to being inaccessible. In the 1950's a causeway was built for easier access but it still becomes covered in water at high tide. The poles still mark the historic walking path through the mud flats to the isolated island, be sure to check the tide tables before you set out - it can be quite dangerous to get caught in the incoming tide.
