Perched along Rue Bouillé, this viewpoint gives you a sweeping look down over the black sand beach of Saint-Pierre and the Caribbean Sea beyond, with the slopes of Mount Pelée rising dramatically in the background. The combination of ruined colonial architecture, dark volcanic sand, and turquoise water makes for a layered, historically rich composition unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Shoot from the elevated road to compress the scene and stack the beach, sea, and mountain together, or use a telephoto lens to isolate the contrast between the lush green hillside and the remnants of the city below. Early morning light is ideal, coming in soft and golden from the east before the harsh midday sun flattens the scene. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full panoramic sweep. The road is easy to walk along and several natural gaps in the vegetation give you clean sightlines down to the shore. (Saint-Pierre, Martinique, France)
