Playa de Riohacha is a long strip of tan sand dotted with palms behind it and the Caribbean out ahead. A waterfront promenade winds along beside it and wooden pier stretches out from the middle. Walking out to the end of the pier lets you shoot back at the city, or pausing in the middle of it lets you use the planks as leading lines running out into open water. Sunset is beautiful here, with the sun dropping over the sea. Rock groynes cut out from the sand every few hundred metres, and work as amazing foreground or as leading lines pulling your eye out over the water. Midday light here is harsh and makes everything flat, so aim to go early in the day or wait for blue hour into sunset. It's windy most days so if you are lucky you may be able to capture the kitesurfers while they are out. The beach is public and free, sitting right at the end of the city streets. Riohacha is where most people start their adventures before heading off to Cabo de la Vela or Punta Gallinas. (Riohacha, La Guajira, Colombia)
