About Pontile di Marina di Massa

Sitting photogenically right in the middle of the seafront, the Pontile di Marina di Massa is a long concrete pier stretching out from the sandy beach into the Ligurian Sea. A pier has sat in this spot since the 1890s, first built out of timber and as a hub for shipping marble from the quarries. The wooden pier was destroyed during the Second World War, and was replaced with a concrete pier in the 1960s. There is lots of space along the beach front to stand on the sand off to one side and turn the pier into a long white line running out toward the horizon. Or you can experiment with walking along the pier and turning around for the view back over the beach to the mountains, where the quarries show as pale patches of bare marble high on the slopes. The coast faces out to the southwest, so the sun goes down over the water in the evening creating amazing colours and peaceful compositions. The pier starts right on the seafront promenade in the middle of Marina di Massa so it's easy to access and free to walk. At certain times of the year there is set access hours so you might not always be able to access the whole pier. (Marina di Massa, Tuscany, Italy)
