Built in the 8th century as an underground water reservoir, this remarkable vaulted cistern offers one of the most atmospheric architectural spaces in the region. Fifteen stone columns arranged in a three-by-five grid support elegant curved arches, all reflected in the still water below, giving you natural symmetry to work with from almost any angle. Rent one of the available rowboats to get low over the water and shoot along the colonnade for a strong perspective compression effect; a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works beautifully here. The square ceiling hatches let in shafts of natural light that create dramatic contrast against the dim interior, so aim to visit when the sun is high enough for that light to penetrate. Bring a tripod since the space is quite dark, and shoot from the boat level to capture the full column reflections in the glassy surface. (Ramla, Central District, Israel)
